Nicosia opens the ‘cool down’ centre again

A 24-HOUR air-conditioned ‘cool down’ centre near the Famagusta Gate in Nicosia will once again give local residents, especially the old and infirm, a place to escape from the stifling summer heat.

The Nicosia Municipality will be reopening the centre, which was set up last year, from tomorrow until temperatures begin to decrease.

The centre is not a medical facility but a place where those who are especially vulnerable to the heat, either because of illness or age, can go to cool down, especially if power cuts leave their homes without power.

It was established in a section of a senior citizens’ centre that co-ordinates social activities and medical services.

Specialised personal will be on hand during working hours.

The centre will be open in time for the weekend, when the temperature is expected to rise to 42 degrees Celsius in Nicosia. An increase in humidity is also on the cards.
