New desalination unit put on hold

THE Cabinet yesterday decided to freeze work on the construction of a desalination unit at Paralimni and at the same time speed up the procedures to build a unit in the Akrotiri area.

After a meeting yesterday, the Cabinet announced that the reason for the suspension of Paralimni’s unit’s construction was that “for the time being an expanded unit in Larnaca covers the water needs of Larnaca, Nicosia and Famagusta”.

The anouncement said that the Akrotiri unit — the construction of which has not started yet — would serve the needs of the Limassol district.
