Car ploughs into accident wreck: five hurt as they tried to help

A BRITISH journalist and mother of three is in intensive care with serious injuries after being mown down by a car as she was coming to the rescue of an earlier accident victim on Saturday night.

Christina Flint Slater, 42, a permanent resident in Limassol, sustained lacerations to the left hand side of her face, chest collusions, concussions and a fracture, the sister in charge at Limassol intensive car unit, Dina Constantinou, told the Cyprus Mail.

She is still unconscious, but by yesterday afternoon had recovered enough to be removed from the ventilator.

The accident happened near her home at around 11.05pm on Saturday night.

A 20-year-old woman from Limassol had crashed on the main Limassol to Platres road, near the Polemidia dam, her car spinning onto the wrong side of the road, injuring her slightly.

Slater, 59-year-old Petros Sophocleous from Kato Polemidia and three other passing drivers went to assist the woman.

But as they were helping, an oncoming car smashed into the wreckage. The blow injured all five trying to help.

The casualties were immediately rushed to hospital. Slater is in intensive care and Sophocleous was kept in overnight; the others were released after receiving first aid.

Forthcoming fundraising efforts on the British Bases are to be directed to Slater, known professionally as Chrissy Flint and her three children, in recognition of her work for the forces.

She has a regular Saturday morning slot on BFBS radio and is a correspondent for the Bases’ newspaper The Lion, as well as a freelance writer.

The 39-year-old driver from Nicosia who drove into the road wreck was arrested, but later released without charge, pending further investigation.

Limassol traffic department are investigating the case.
