Owner to close Ergates foundry after protest

ONE OF the owners of a foundry near Ergates village, suspected of damaging the health of the villagers with lead, cadmium and dioxin in its smoke emissions, yesterday agreed to close it for five months, following violent protests on Monday night against its continued operation.

Globalsoft takes over Cycom in £16.5m surprise

GLOBALSOFT.COM shook the bourse yesterday with its surprise takeover of software developer and provider Cycom in a cash deal worth £16.5 million.

Globalsoft signed a deal with owners PriceWaterhouseCoopers yesterday morning. Earlier this month the company also took over the operations of the Word Processing Centre, Infostar and Copystar in Nicosia.

Kyprianou says his decision to quit is final

OUTGOING Diko Chairman Spyros Kyprianou yesterday pledged his unconditional support for the party he founded in 1976 and has chaired since, but insisted his departure as its leader was final.

Swiss tourists on drug charges

THREE Swiss tourists were arrested in Larnaca yesterday and remanded in custody for seven days for allegedly possessing 48 grams of cannabis, police said.

They said they intercepted the suspects’ car at the port roundabout after following the trio from Larnaca Airport, where they had arrived earlier in the day.

Journalists arrested in the north

THE OWNER of the opposition Turkish Cypriot newspaper Avrupa and four journalists of the Press Union were arrested yesterday by ‘police’ in the north when they began a campaign to raise money to buy computers for the paper.

SBA police find 32 pot plants

BRITISH Sovereign Bases Area (SBA) police yesterday, acting on a tipoff, said they found 32 potted cannabis plants in the Ouzoum Laxia area of the Bases.

SBA police in Dhekelia said they found the plants hidden in a copse of Acacia trees in the Dhekelia area.

Eurocypria high on award

EUROCYPRIA has won the distinction of being one of the top three performing charter airlines in Europe, the company announced yesterday.

According to a statement from Eurocypria, a subsidiary of national flag carrier Cyprus Airways, the honour followed another last year.
